Dharmasthala, historically known as Kuduma, is a renowned temple town nestled in the lush Western Ghats of Karnataka on the banks of the river Netravati. The spiritual essence of the town is defined by the Manjunatha Temple, which is a rare and unique confluence of religious traditions. While the presiding deity is Lord Shiva, the temple is managed by a hereditary trustee of the Jain faith, known as the Heggade, symbolizing the harmony between Shaivism and Jainism.
The mythological origin of Dharmasthala is rooted in a legend where the local chieftain Birmanna Pergade and his wife were visited by the guardians of Dharma. These beings commanded them to build a shrine and perform charity. According to local folklore, they transformed the place into a center of 'Dharma'ādefined by righteousness and compassion. The temple itself features a blend of Dravidian and Kerala architectural styles, with beautiful wood carvings and a sanctum that radiates divine energy. The recent installation of a massive 39-foot monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali (Gomateshwara) on Ratnagiri Hill has further solidified the town's status as a premier center for Jain pilgrimage.
Historically, the region flourished under the patronage of local chieftains and later received immense respect from various dynasties ruling the Karnataka plateau. The temple complex is not just a place of worship but a massive social service organization. It is famous for its tradition of 'Anna-Daana' (feeding the hungry), where thousands of pilgrims, regardless of caste, creed, or religion, are served free, nutritious meals twice a day in the grand 'Annapoorna' dining hall.
Architecturally, the complex boasts a serene layout with a distinct sanctum, spacious courtyards, and a museumāthe Manjusha Museumāwhich preserves rare artifacts, ancient manuscripts, and antique temple chariots. The temple atmosphere is strictly disciplined yet welcoming, characterized by the gentle ringing of bells and the aroma of traditional incense, creating an environment of profound tranquility.
The annual Laksha Deepotsava (festival of a hundred thousand lamps) is the most significant event, where the temple is illuminated by thousands of oil lamps, reflecting on the river waters and creating an ethereal sight. During the annual Rathothsava (car festival), the temple deities are taken in grand chariots through the streets, drawing devotees from all corners of India to witness the spectacle of devotion and cultural grandeur.
