IDUKKI
The
unspoiled natural queen of Kerala, Idukki is the most gifted district
in the state. The word “Idukki” is supposed to be
derived from the Malayalam word “Idukku” which means
a narrow gauge. High ranges and wooded valleys are girded by 3
main rivers - Periyar, Thalayar and Thodupuzhayar - and their
tributaries. As a tourist destination Idukki offers diverse attractions
like wildlife sanctuaries, hill stations, spice plantation tours,
mountain treks, elephant rides etc and is of course an ideal year-round
holiday destination. Idukki has a large population of tribals,
the main tribes being Muthavan, Malvedan and Malampandaram. The
tribes of Kerala have unique customs and beliefs and maintain
an ethos, which is distinctly different from that of the mainstream
culture.
Places of Attraction
Periyar

elephants, rich plantations and thick jungles. In the Periyar
forest of Thekkady is one of the finest wildlife reserves in India.
The
sanctuary provides a lovely and comfortable way for the tourists
to see the animals by means of boat rides on the man-made lake,
which the wildlife areas encircle. Thekkady offers great opportunities
