KALARIPPAYATTU - Comprehensive system of Martial Arts

Kalaripayattu is the most comprehensive combat systems existing in this world today. The term ‘Kalaripayattu’ is derived from 2 words. ‘KALARI’ meaning ‘a training ground’ and ‘PAYATTU’ meaning ‘exercise’ which denotes ‘MARTIAL TRAINING’. Sage Parasurama is believed to be the first master of this ancient martial art. The legend goes like this - After reclaiming the land of Kerala from the ocean, sage Parasurama taught his disciples the techniques of Kalaripayattu means combat training inside the disciplinary training and physical culture. The Kalaripayattu training aims at the ultimate co-ordination of mind and body.

The treatment called UZHICHIL’ is integral to KALARI. It is a physiotherapic system of full body massage, rooted in Ayurveda. The body dynamics of these martial art forms informs the choreography of most of Kerala’s performing arts.
