Iruppu Falls

Iruppu Falls, also known as the Lakshmana Teertha Falls, is a breathtaking cascade located in the Brahmagiri Range of the Kodagu district, Karnataka. The river Lakshmana Teertha descends from a height of 170 feet in two dramatic stages, creating a thunderous spectacle amidst the dense, tranquil forests of the Western Ghats. The location is not only a natural wonder but a site of profound spiritual significance, serving as a gateway to the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary.

The spiritual centerpiece of the area is the Irpu Rameshwara Temple. According to local legend and Puranic tradition, Lord Rama and his brother Lakshmana passed through these forests while searching for Sita. During their journey, Lakshmana shot an arrow into the Brahmagiri hills to manifest a water source, which created the river now known as Lakshmana Teertha. Lord Rama is said to have consecrated a Shiva Linga at this site, establishing the Rameshwara Temple. It is customary for pilgrims to take a holy dip in the river before offering prayers at the temple to cleanse themselves of sins.

Architecturally, the Rameshwara Temple exhibits the traditional Kerala style, characterized by a circular garbagriha (sanctum sanctorum) and a low, sloping shikhara. The temple complex houses shrines dedicated to various deities including Bhairava, Mahadeva, Ganapati, and Parvathi. A sacred Ashoka tree stands in the temple courtyard, symbolically recalling the period of Sita’s captivity in Lanka, adding a layer of poignant mythological depth to the visitor experience.

Visitors typically arrive at the site after a journey through the scenic landscapes of Coorg. From the temple, a well-maintained forest trail leads upward to the waterfall. The path winds through lush greenery, offering glimpses of unique flora and fauna typical of the Brahmagiri Range. The trek is considered moderate and takes about 30 to 45 minutes to reach the main viewpoint, where the spray of the falls provides a cooling mist, especially refreshing during the summer months.

The site witnesses a massive influx of devotees during Shivaratri, when thousands gather to celebrate the marriage of Shiva and Parvathi with traditional rituals. Beyond the religious significance, the proximity to the Nagarhole National Park and the Brahmagiri peak makes this an essential stop for nature lovers and trekkers. The combination of serene temple architecture, the raw power of the cascading water, and the surrounding biodiversity ensures that Iruppu Falls remains one of the most cherished destinations in South Karnataka.
