Kovalam has
been rated as one of the finest and spectacular beaches in India
and it has an international reputation. It takes a 30 minutes
drive from Thiruvananthapuram to reach the spot. There are three
adjacent, crescent-shaped beaches here. Although each of these
beaches offers a unique charm of its own, it is the lighthouse
beach which has been the favourite of many tourists.
It had been a preferred destination for the hippies and the backpackers
from late 1950’s and it was these early visitors who spread
the word about Kovalam, which has shallow and crystal clear waters.
Although
the beach had found a place in the international tourist map for
the last several decades, it still attracts both the rich and
the budget traveller from across the globe because of its inherent
charm and un-spoilt beauty. The facilities here can cater to the
needs of all sorts of tourists.
There are
several ayurvedic centres here--both government-authorised as
well as private ones-- which offer services from simple massage
to lengthy treatments according to individual needs.
