Mahadeshwara Betta

Male Mahadeshwara Betta, popularly known as MM Hills, is a revered pilgrim centre situated in the Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka, atop a picturesque hill range covered in dense forests. The presiding deity, Lord Mahadeshwara, is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. According to local folklore and Puranic legends, the deity appeared in this forest region centuries ago to perform penance and bless the tribal communities, specifically the Soliga tribes. The saint-god Mahadeshwara is believed to have arrived here on a tiger, and his divine presence continues to protect the surrounding wilderness.

The historical significance of this site is deeply linked to the Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore, who were great devotees of Lord Mahadeshwara. Historical records and stone inscriptions suggest that the temple gained significant prominence during the Vijayanagara era, with further patronage and structural expansion provided by the Mysore Maharajas.
