Amrithapura Overview
Amrithapura is a serene village located in the Tarikere taluk of Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka, renowned for its exquisite Hoysala architecture. Situated about 67 kms from Chikkamagaluru, it is famous for the 12th-century Amritheshwara Temple.
History
The Amritheshwara Temple was built in 1196 A.D. during the rule of the Hoysala Empire by Amriteshwara Dandanayaka, a general of King Veera Ballala II. It stands as a splendid specimen of Hoysala art and craftsmanship.
Architecture
The temple features intricate soapstone carvings, ornate pillars, beautifully sculptured figures, and finely detailed wall panels depicting Hindu epics and mythological stories. It has a single shrine (ekakula) structure with a well-preserved superstructure.
Highlights
The stellar stone lathe-turned pillars, exquisitely carved outer walls with miniature shrines, and the nearby Sompura on the banks of the Bhadra River, which is one of the Pancha Kshetras.
