About Avani
Avani, located 12 kms from Mulbagal in Karnataka (Pin: 563127), is a renowned Shaiva pilgrim center and historical site often referred to as 'Avantika Kshetra' and 'Dakshina Gaya'. Steeped in both Ramayana and Mahabharata mythology, Avani is famous for its cluster of ancient temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, which are named after the Pancha Pandavas. It also houses an ancient Mutt belonging to the order of Shankaracharya, headed by a pontiff.
History & Mythology
According to legend, Avani is believed to be the place where sage Valmiki's ashram was located and where Sita gave birth to Lava and Kusha. The hillock and surrounding areas are dotted with shrines and mythological spots such as Sita's pond (Sita Sarovara) and temples built during the Nolamba and Vijayanagara periods.
Architecture
The temple complex showcases remarkable Dravidian and Nolamba architectural styles, featuring intricate stone carvings, dedicated sanctums, and pillars reflecting ancient South Indian temple craftsmanship.
