Banashankari Amma Temple, located at Cholachagudda near Badami along SH 57, is one of the most venerated pilgrimage sites in Karnataka. Dedicated to Goddess Banashankari (an incarnation of Goddess Parvati/Shakambari), the temple historically served as the tutelary deity for the royal Chalukyan rulers of Badami.

History & Significance

The original shrine is believed to have been constructed in the 9th century AD under the patronage of the Rashtrakutas and Badami Chalukyas. According to legend, the Goddess slew the demon Durgamasura here after the local populace prayed for relief from drought and famine; she nourished the people with vegetation, earning her the name Shakambari. The current architectural structure largely reflects an 18th-century Maratha reconstruction by chieftain Parshuram Agale, blending Dravidian temple layout with subtle Maratha and Indo-Islamic influence.

Architecture & Highlights

  • Garbhagriha (Sanctum): Houses a striking black stone idol of Goddess Banashankari seated on a lioness, depicted in a eight-armed Durga form wielding a trident, sword, bell, shield, and noose while crushing a demon underfoot.
  • Haridra Tirtha Pond: A massive rectangular sacred water tank in front of the temple enclosed by stone porticos and pillared colonnades (mantapas).
  • Deepastambha: A magnificent three-storeyed stone lamp tower constructed on the bank of the tank, lit during special festival evenings.
  • Banashankari Jatre: The grand annual temple fair held during January-February (Pushya Paurnima), featuring a massive wooden chariot procession and a month-long cultural market attracting thousands of pilgrims across South India.
