Banavasi is an ancient temple town located in the Sirsi taluk of Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka. Situated about 140 kms from Karwar and 24 kms from Sirsi, it is nestled in the evergreen forests of the Western Ghats along the banks of the Varada River.

Banavasi is the ancient capital of the Kadamba dynasty, who were the earliest rulers of Karnataka. Its rich historical significance is highlighted by visits from legendary Sanskrit poet Kalidasa and missionaries sent by Emperor Ashoka. The town breathes history through its laterite fort and magnificent religious structures.
Architecture & Highlights
The town is globally renowned for the historic Madhukeshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple complex showcases stunning architecture featuring the monolith Asthana Mandapa and the Triloka Mandapa, which are shining examples of Sonda art.
