Overview of Barkana Falls

Barkana Falls is one of the ten highest waterfalls in India, plunging from a height of about 850 ft (259 metres above sea level). Located in the Balehalli forest area, approximately 7 km from Agumbe village in the Shimoga district of Karnataka, it originates from the Seeta River and serves as a prime source of hydroelectricity in the state.

Highlights & Trekking

The waterfall is nestled amidst lush green forests of the Western Ghats and offers a spectacular view, especially during the monsoon season. The name 'Barkana' is derived from 'barka', a reference to the Mouse Deer found in the region. The area is a renowned trekking destination via Gumbo Ghats, featuring rich biodiversity including changing flora every 100 meters, bamboo groves, and the rare 'Guruji' plant that blossoms every 7 years, signaling a drought and a massive increase in natural honey production.

Travel Guide

Visitors can reach the waterfall via a 4 km trek from the vehicle track end point, or by motorbike through the dense green forest. While the monsoon offers the most breathtaking views of the gushing waters, the trails can be very slippery and infested with leeches. Hence, the early winter season is considered the best time to visit.
