Basavaraj Durga Island, Honnavar
Basavaraj Durga Island is a historic fortified island located in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Honnavar in Karnataka. Spread over an area of 19 hectares, the island is accessible by boat or launch from the mainland. The ancient fort on the island was originally constructed during the Vijayanagar Empire. In 1690, Shivappa Nayaka, the ruler of the Keladi Nayaka kingdom, captured the fort and renamed it Basavaraja Durga in memory of the Keladi prince, Basavaraja. The island offers a blend of historical ruins, scenic sea views, and a tranquil atmosphere.
