Located 38 kms from Madikeri in Karnataka (PIN 571247), Bhagamandala is a revered pilgrimage town situated on the banks of the sacred river Cauvery. It marks the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Cauvery river and its tributaries, the Kannike and the mythical Sujyothi river. Pilgrims consider taking a holy dip here as highly sacred before proceeding to Talakaveri, the birthplace of River Cauvery.
Architecture & History
Near the confluence stands the famous Bhagandeshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple complex also houses shrines for Lord Vishnu, Subramanya, and Ganapathi. Built in a peculiar and striking Kerala style of architecture, characterized by sloping tiled roofs and intricate woodwork, the temple stands out from traditional Karnataka temple designs. According to local mythology, the sage Bhaganda installed the Shiva linga here, hence the name Bhagamandala.
