Located 45 kms from Honnavar in Karnataka, Bhatkal is an ancient port town that once served as a prominent gateway to the mighty Vijayanagar empire. Inhabited historically by the Navayats—enterprising Muslim traders of Arab origin—Bhatkal boasts a unique cultural tapestry blending diverse architectural and religious traditions.

History and Architecture

The town is dotted with remarkable monuments from the Vijayanagar era. Notable among them is the Khatappaya Narayana temple, famous for its five finely sculptured Ramayana panels.
