Brindavan Gardens is a world-renowned show garden located in the Mandya district of the Indian state of Karnataka. Lying adjacent to the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) Dam, which is built across the river Cauvery, the gardens are situated about 19 kms from the cultural capital of Karnataka, Mysore.
Named after the erstwhile ruler of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wodeyar, the construction of the dam and the adjoining gardens began in the early 20th century under the supervision of the legendary engineer Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The fabulous gardens stretch out in magnificent terraces below the dam across an area of 60 acres.
The main attraction of Brindavan Gardens is its symmetrical design, lush botanical lawns, and extensive varieties of plants, shrubs, and trees. At nightfall, the gardens undergo a magical transformation, turning into an exotic fairyland illuminated by twinkling lights, swirling fountains, and artificial waterfalls. The musical fountain, where water dances to the tunes of harmonious music through synchronized lighting, is a major highlight for tourists.
Visitors can also enjoy boating in the KRS reservoir lake that divides the terrace gardens into two parts (North and South Brindavan), connected by a bridge. The gardens are particularly vibrant and heavily visited on Sundays and public holidays when the grand illumination is turned on.
