Overview of Chitradurga

Nestling in the heart of Karnataka, Chitradurga was once the capital of the Pallegars, boasting a rich historical background. The town is famous for its massive hill fort surrounded by seven concentric fortifications, presenting a masterpiece of military architecture and impregnability.

History & Mythology

According to Hindu epics, Chitradurga is linked to the Ramayana, where the heroic bird Jatayu fell mortally wounded after fighting Ravana to save Sita Devi. It is also associated with the Mahabharata, where Bhima of the Pandavas is said to have killed the man-eating demon Hidimbasura here.

Architecture & Highlights

The monumental fort features seven levels of walls, winding passages, and multiple gateways designed to confuse invaders. There are several ancient temples on the hill dedicated to deities like Gopalaswamy, Sampige Siddheswar, Ucchangiamma, and the oldest Hidimbeshwara temple. The fort is also immortalized by the tale of Onake Obavva, who single-handedly fought off invading soldiers.
