Located 42 kms away, Gadag is a prosperous town known in ancient days as Maha Agrahara. It boasts magnificent temples showcasing exquisite Chalukyan architecture. Key attractions include the Trikuteshwara and Saraswati temples situated within the same compound, and the historic Viranarayana temple located in the heart of the town. The famous Kannada poet Naranappa, popularly known as Kumara Vyasa, is said to have composed the great epic Mahabharata in poetic form while sitting in the main hall of the Viranarayana temple, inspired by the deity. Today, Gadag is also a prominent center for cotton trade, printing industry, and publishing work, housing the largest number of printing presses in the region.
