The skyline of Vijayapura (formerly Bijapur), a historic city in north Karnataka, is dominated by India's largest antiquated dome—the iconic Gol Gumbaz. Derived from 'Gola Gummata' meaning circular dome, this grand structure is the mausoleum of Sultan Mohammed Adil Shah, the seventh ruler of the Adil Shahi dynasty. Constructed out of dark grey basalt, this monument sits proudly within a beautiful manicured garden complex about 2 km from Vijayapura city center.

History:
Mohammed Adil Shah initiated the construction of his mausoleum immediately upon ascending the throne in 1626. Aiming to build a tomb far grander in scale than the Ibrahim Rauza (the ornate tomb of his father Ibrahim Adil Shah II), Gol Gumbaz was conceived as a single colossal chamber structure. Construction spanned his entire 30-year reign, but remained partially unfinished at his sudden death in 1656. Buried alongside the Sultan are his two wives, Taj Jahan Begum and Aroos Bibi, his mistress Rambha, his daughter, and his grandson.

Design & Architecture:
Designed by architect Yaqut of Dabul, Gol Gumbaz showcases the Deccan Indo-Islamic architectural style—a blend of Persian, Mughal, and native Dravidian influences. The tomb is a giant cube topped by a hemispherical dome with an exterior diameter of almost 600 feet, making it the second-largest dome in the world after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The single chamber covers nearly 1,700 square meters without any supporting pillars. Four seven-story octagonal minarets anchor the corners, accessible via winding staircases that lead to the famous eighth-story 'Whispering Gallery'. Due to its remarkable acoustics, the faintest sound echoes up to eleven times across a distance of 37 meters.
