Overview of Gomatagiri
Gommatagiri is a prominent Jain pilgrimage center situated in the Bilikere hobli of Hunsur taluk, about 25 kms from Mysore, Karnataka. Located very close to the main road leading to Hunsur, the site features a majestic monolithic statue of Gommateshwara (Bahubali) installed on a small hillock known as Gomatagiri.
History & Significance
The site holds immense spiritual value for the Jains of Mysore and surrounding regions. Similar to the famous Bahubali statues at Shravanabelagola, Karkala, and Venur, the statue at Gomatagiri is a symbol of peace, detachment, and non-violence. The hallmark event of this pilgrimage center is the grand Mastakabhisheka (head-anointing ceremony), which is celebrated once every twelve years with great religious fervor and devotion.
Architecture & Highlights
The monolithic statue stands tall on the serene hillock, offering panoramic views of the surrounding rural landscape. Visitors and pilgrims must climb the hillock to reach the sanctum area where the statue is installed. The peaceful and quiet ambiance makes it an ideal spot for meditation, spiritual reflection, and photography of historical architecture.
