Gulbarga (Kalaburagi) Comprehensive Tourist & Pilgrim Guide

Gulbarga, officially known as Kalaburagi, is a historically rich city located in Karnataka (Pin: 585101). Rising to prominence under the Bahmani dynasty founded by Hasan Gangu, the city sits on the oldest field of the Gondwana plateau which broke up to become the Deccan Peninsula. Gulbarga represents a fascinating synthesis of Hindu and Muslim cultures. Originally a Hindu city before the Muslim conquest, its magnificent fort was built by Raja Gulchand and features 15 towers and 26 guns.

Key Highlights & Architecture

  • Gulbarga Fort: A massive structure bearing witness to several historical battles.
  • Jumma Masjid: Built by Feroze Shah inside the fort, uniquely modeled on the great mosque of Cordoba in Spain.
  • Tomb of Khwaja Banda Nawaz: The exquisite shrine of the Sufi Saint Khwaja Syed Mohammad Gesu Daraz, accompanied by a mosque, Sarai, and college.
  • Sharana Basaveshwara Temple: Situated near a vast tank, this revered pilgrim center attracts thousands of devotees. The saint came to Gulbarga in the 18th century during a severe famine and dedicated his life to feeding the poor.
