Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib is a historical Sikh pilgrimage site located in Shiva Nagar, Bidar, Karnataka. Built in 1948, the shrine is dedicated to the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Set in a serene valley enclosed by laterite hills on three sides, the gurudwara complex comprises the main Darbar Sahib, Diwan Hall, Langar Hall, and a sacred Sukhaasan room where the holy scripture, Guru Granth Sahib, is reverently placed.
History & Significance: According to Sikh history, Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited Bidar around 1512 AD during his second missionary journey (Udasi) accompanied by his disciple Bhai Mardana. At the time, the area suffered from an acute shortage of clean drinking water, with available groundwater being bracketed and salty. Moved by the hardship of the local villagers, Guru Nanak touched a rock with his foot and shifted it, causing a continuous spring of sweet, clear freshwater to burst forth. This natural spring (Jhira) has been flowing constantly for over 500 years and is carefully preserved within the shrine complex.
Key Highlights:
- Amrit Kund: A sacred pool located opposite the main shrine where the sweet spring water is collected. Devotees take a holy dip here, believing it cleanses body and soul.
- Guru ka Langar: A massive free community kitchen providing nutritious vegetarian meals round-the-clock to all visitors regardless of caste, religion, or background.
- Sikh Museum: Dedicated to Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, showcasing historical paintings, artwork, and narratives depicting key events in Sikh history.
- Festivals: Huge congregations gather during Guru Nanak Jayanti, Baisakhi, Holi, and Dussehra, attracting over 400,000 to 500,000 pilgrims annually.
