Ikkeri is a historic hamlet located just 3 km from Sagara in the Shimoga district of Karnataka. It served as the capital of the Keladi Nayakas after 1560 AD. The place is renowned for the magnificent 16th-century Aghoreshwara Temple, a stellar example of mixed Hoysala and Vijayanagara architectural styles.
History & Architecture
The name 'Ikkeri' means 'two streets' in Kannada. When the Keladi rulers shifted their capital from Keladi to Ikkeri, it flourished as a major cultural and political center. The Aghoreshwara Temple is built entirely of finely carved stone blocks without mortar. The structure boasts intricately sculpted pillars, ornate ceilings, and marvelous stone sculptures. A colossal monolithic Nandi sits in an open pavilion facing the main sanctum.
