Overview of Iruppu Falls

Iruppu Falls, also known as Lakshmana Teertha Falls, is a magnificent waterfall located in the Brahmagiri Range of the Kodagu (Coorg) district in Karnataka. The river Lakshmana Teertha plunges down from a height of 170 feet in two distinct stages, creating a ceaseless thunder amidst the silence of the thick woods.

History and Architecture

En route to the falls lies the sacred Rameshwara Temple, an Ishwara temple believed to have been built by Lord Rama, with the Shiva Linga consecrated by the Lord himself. The temple features a circular garbagriha and a low shikhara built in the traditional Kerala style. It houses shrines dedicated to Gandharva, Bhairava, Mahadeva, Ganapati, and Parvathi, alongside an Ashoka tree in the front recalling Sita’s captivity.

Pilgrimage and Highlights

The site is believed to possess the power to cleanse one’s sins. Thousands of devotees visit during Shivaratri to offer prayers and take a holy dip. Visitors trek through natural forests from the temple surrounded by paddy fields to reach the roaring falls. Nearby points of interest include the Brahmagiri Peak and Pakshi-Patala within the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary.
