About Jalasangvi Kalleshwara Temple
Jalasangvi (or Jalsangvi) is a serene historical village situated approximately 10 km from Humnabad and 40 km from Bidar in North Karnataka. It is renowned for the ancient Kalleshwara Temple, a magnificent architectural jewel built during the 11th century under the reign of the Kalyani Chalukya ruler, King Vikramaditya VI (often displaying structural features that inspired later Hoysala art styles).
Key Architectural Highlights
Perched on the edge of a historic village tank, the Kalleshwara Temple is celebrated for its breathtaking bracket figures known as Madanikas or Salabhanjikas. These sculpted, seductive beauties are carved in dynamic dance poses with remarkable intricate detail.
The most famous sculpture in Jalasangvi depicts a Shilabalika (sculpted maiden) writing an inscription in ancient Kannada script on a tablet, which reads in praise of King Vikramaditya VI. This rare depiction of a female scholar/scribe is considered an iconic masterpiece of Indian temple art.
Travel Guide & Visitor Tips
Visitors to Jalasangvi can combine their trip with visits to nearby Maniknagar (Manik Prabhu Temple) and Bidar Fort. The setting around the village tank offers a quiet, contemplative atmosphere perfect for history enthusiasts, photographers, and pilgrims alike.
