Kateel - Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple

Situated on the outskirts of Mangalore in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, Kateel is a renowned and spiritually significant pilgrimage centre. The holy temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga Parameshwari and is uniquely situated on an islet in the middle of the sacred River Nandini, flanked by Kamalagiri hill. According to legends, the place is associated with Sage Jabali and the slaying of the demon Arunasura.

Architecture and Highlights

The temple showcases traditional Kerala and coastal Karnataka temple architecture. The inner sanctum and halls feature exquisite wood and stone carvings. Notably, the images and pillars of the hall are adorned with carvings by the famous sculptor Ranjal Gopal Shenoy. Thousands of devotees visit daily to seek blessings and participate in the vibrant Yakshagana performances hosted by the temple troupes.

Kateel is easily accessible from Mangalore city (around 26 km away) via road. Regular buses and taxis are available from Mangalore Central and State Bank bus stands. Mangalore International Airport is the nearest airport, located approximately 18 km from Kateel.
