Overview of Keladi

Keladi is a historically significant village located about 5 kms from Sagar in the Shimoga district of Karnataka. It served as the first capital of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty (also known as the Nayakas of Ikkeri), which later shifted its capital to Ikkeri. The dynasty flourished after the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire and comprised 16 kings and two notable queens, of whom Queen Chennammaji is the most famous for her valor and for sheltering Raja Ramzat, the son of Shivaji.

History & Architecture

The town boasts exquisite examples of Hoysala, Kadamba, and Dravidian architectural styles. The prominent monuments include the Rameshwara Temple and the Veerabhadra Temple, built by the Nayakas. These temples feature intricate wood carvings, stone pillars, and unique roof structures. A museum located near the temple complex houses ancient coins, palm-leaf manuscripts, weapons, and artifacts depicting the rich history of the Keladi dynasty.
