Overview
Kokkare Bellur is a renowned rural haven located in the Mandya district of Karnataka, famous for its harmonious coexistence between humans and large flocks of migratory waterbirds, particularly the Spot-billed Pelican and Painted Stork. The village gets its name from 'Kokkare', the Kannada word for storks, and 'Bellur', meaning village of jaggery.
History & Significance
For decades, villagers have protected these birds, treating them as harbingers of good luck and prosperity. The guano (bird droppings) from the nesting birds serves as a natural fertilizer for the villagers' agricultural fields.
Highlights
The primary attraction is bird watching, where thousands of pelicans and storks nest right in the middle of the village trees, making it a unique eco-tourism destination.
