Kunchikal Falls: Overview and Travel Guide

Kunchikal Falls is one of the highest waterfalls in India, plunging from a height of approximately 455 metres (1,493 feet). Located near Masthikatte-Hulikal in the Hosanagara taluk of the Shimoga district in Karnataka (PIN: 577448), the waterfall is formed by the cascading waters of the Varahi River.

The waterfall features a marvellous backdrop of hundreds of rocks against which the white water gushes down for more than a kilometre. Surrounded by dense Western Ghats greenery, the area transforms into a splendid, pristine sight during the monsoon season. Due to the construction of the Mani Dam nearby and underground power generation stations, water flow is largely regulated, making the monsoon season the absolute best time to witness the falls in full force.

Because of security reasons and proximity to the Mani Dam, public movement around the immediate waterfall is restricted, making it a lesser-explored destination. However, this restriction has kept the area remarkably clean, pristine, and free from plastic waste.
