Overview
Lalitha Mahal Palace is the second-largest palace in Mysore, situated near the foothills of Chamundi Hills. Built in 1921 by Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, the Maharaja of Mysore, it was constructed specifically to host the Viceroy of India during his visit. Designed in the white Italianate palazzo style, the palace draws heavy inspiration from St. Paul's Cathedral in London.
History & Architecture
The palace was designed by E.W. Fritchley, a Bombay-based architect. It features a sweeping twin-staircase at the entrance, towering Ionic and Corinthian columns, a central dome, and sprawling manicured gardens. The interiors are adorned with genuine Belgian crystal chandeliers, Italian marble, polished wood, and luxurious period furniture.
Travel Guide
Today, the palace functions partly as a heritage hotel managed by the Ashok Group (Karnataka Tourism). Visitors can explore the magnificent ballroom, banquet hall, and historical galleries that showcase paintings of the Wadiyar dynasty.
