Mahakuta is an ancient and revered Shaivite pilgrimage complex situated in a peaceful, lush glade at the foot of two hillocks, just 5 kilometers from Badami in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka. Historically referred to as Dakshina Kashi (Kashi of the South), Mahakuta was a prominent center for both Shaivites and Shaktas during the early Chalukyan period.

built in the 6th and 7th centuries CE by the Badami Chalukyas, the site features a cluster of around two dozen temples showcasing a blend of Dravidian and Nagara architectural styles. The primary shrine is dedicated to Mahakuteshwara (Lord Shiva). A major highlight of the complex is the Vishnu Pushkarini, a natural freshwater spring pond where pilgrims bathe. In the center of this pond stands a small carved pavilion sheltering a rare five-faced Shiva Linga known as the Panchamukha Shiva Linga.
