Overview of Melkote

Melkote (also known as Melukote) is located in the Mandya district of Karnataka, situated 48 km from Mandya and about 133 km from Bengaluru. Perched on the rocky Yadugiri hill overlooking the Cauvery valley, it is one of the most sacred Sri Vaishnava pilgrim centres in South India.

History & Significance

The town gained immense prominence in the 12th century when the great Sri Vaishnava saint and philosopher Sri Ramanujacharya stayed here for fourteen years after fleeing the Chola kingdom. He restored the temple and revived the worship of Lord Cheluva Narayana.

Architecture & Highlights

The town features two prominent hilltop temples: the grand Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple and the Yoga Narasimha Swamy Temple perched atop another rocky hill. Melkote is globally famous for its annual Vairamudi Festival held in March-April, drawing hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to witness the deity adorned with a legendary diamond-studded crown.
