Murudeshwar is a scenic holy coastal town located in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, situated between Honnavar and Bhatkal. Famous for housing the world's second-tallest Shiva statue, the town is bound by the roaring Arabian Sea on the west and the towering Western Ghats on the east. According to Hindu mythology, the area is believed to have been sanctified by a piece of the Prana Linga of Mahabaleshwara from Gokarna, which was thrown down by the demon king Ravanasura.
Architecture & Highlights
The ancient Murudeshwar Temple has been reconstructed in a modern style featuring intricate carvings and magnificent statues. The colossal 123-foot Shiva statue set against the backdrop of the sea is the major highlight. The temple complex also features a 20-storied Rajagopura equipped with elevators offering a panoramic view of the idol and the coastline. Netrani Island (Pigeon Island), located off the coast, is a renowned spot for scuba diving and snorkeling.
