Nandi Hills is a famous ancient hill fortress and summer resort located in the Chikballapur district of Karnataka, situated about 60 km from Bangalore. Standing tall at 1,497 meters above sea level, it is renowned for its pleasant climate, breathtaking sunrise views, and historical significance. It is believed to be the origin of several rivers, including the Palar and Pennar.
History & Architecture
The hills hold immense historical importance. At the foothills in Nandi town lies the ancient Bhoganandishwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, showcasing exquisite sculpture and architecture from the Ganga and Chola periods. On top of the hill, another Shiva temple, the Yoganandishwara Temple, stands as a spiritual landmark. Nandi Hills was notably the summer retreat of Tipu Sultan, who fortified the hilltop with strong walls and bastions, famously known as Tipu's Drop.
