Overview
The Ramohalli Banyan Tree, locally known as Dodda Alada Mara (Big Banyan Tree), is a giant banyan tree located in Ramohalli village, about 28 km from Bangalore, Karnataka. Spanning over 3 acres, this majestic tree is estimated to be over 400 years old. Its massive canopy and intricate network of aerial roots make it a breathtaking natural wonder and a popular weekend getaway for nature lovers and families.
History & Significance
The tree suffered a major setback in the late 2000s when a fungal disease (root rot) destroyed its main trunk, splitting the massive canopy into several independent root systems. Despite this, the independent parts continue to thrive, covering a vast area. It serves not only as a popular picnic spot but also as a natural habitat for numerous birds and monkeys.
