Located on the banks of the river Cauvery near Srirangapatna in Mandya district, Karnataka, Ranganathittu is the largest bird sanctuary in the state. Spanning across a group of six islets, it is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, bird watchers, and nature lovers.
Overview & History
The sanctuary was declared a protected area in 1940, largely due to the efforts of the renowned ornithologist Salim Ali, who noticed that the islets formed a nesting ground for a vast variety of migratory birds. The Cauvery River forms a picturesque backdrop with lush green vegetation, making it an ecological treasure.
Highlights & Wildlife
Ranganathittu is home to a diverse range of resident and migratory birds. Visitors can spot Painted Storks, Open-billed Storks, White Ibis, Little Egrets, Darters, Pond Herons, Wild Ducks, Cormorants, Partridges, and flocks of Spoonbills. Many species migrate here from as far away as Siberia. Apart from birds, the sanctuary is also famous for its population of Marsh Crocodiles (Mugger crocodiles) basking on the river banks, as well as otters and flying foxes.
Travel Guide
The sanctuary offers guided boat rides around the islets, which provide close-up views of nesting birds and crocodiles. It is an ideal spot for family picnics, bird watching, and nature photography.
