History & Architecture
Shimoga is steeped in history, having been ruled by prominent dynasties including the Keladi Nayakas. The famed ruler Shivappa Nayaka left an indelible mark on the region. Though the ancient fort is largely in ruins, visitors can still explore a few remaining monuments and temples. The old palace has been converted into a fine museum that exhibits the history of the dynasty along with ancient masterpieces of sculpture.
