Shivaganga Hills is an ancient religious and picnic centre situated about 60 kms from Bengaluru on the way to Tumkur. Rising over 1380 metres above sea level, it features a striking monolithic black granite hill. Known as 'Dakshina Kashi', the hill holds immense spiritual significance for both Hindus and Jains, dotted with revered cave temples and historical landmarks.
History & Significance
The hill is historically and mythologically rich. It features famous cave temples dedicated to Lord Gangadhara and Honna Devi. Legend and history associate the place with Hoysala Queen Shantala Devi, who is believed to have visited it. The area is also home to a branch of the Shankara Matha headed by a pontiff.
Architecture
The geography is defined by a massive monolithic black granite hill interspersed with natural cave formations transformed into shrines. The architecture reflects traditional Dravidian rock-cut styles combined with later additions.
