Shree Gokarnanatheshwara Temple, popularly known as Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatha Kshethra, is a prominent temple located in Kudroli, Mangaluru, Karnataka. Dedicated to Lord Shiva (Lord Shree Gokarnanatha), the temple holds immense spiritual and social significance, particularly for its role in social reform and community equality.
History & Significance
The temple was consecrated in February 1912 by the great social reformer and saint Sri Narayana Guru. It was established as a spiritual center to uplift the Billawa community and marginalized sections of society who were traditionally denied entry into mainstream temples. Sri Narayana Guru consecrated the Shivalinga brought by him and advocated for the principle of 'One Caste, One Religion, One God for Man'.
Architecture
Originally built in traditional Kerala architecture, the temple underwent major renovation in 1991 and was transformed into the magnificent Chola architectural style. The Gopuram (entrance tower) and temple complex feature intricate carvings and artistic representations of various Hindu deities.
Highlights & Festivals
The temple is world-famous for its grand Navarathri Utsava (Mangalore Dasara). During this festival, a grand procession of Goddess Durga along with the Nava Durgas takes place, attracting lakhs of devotees and tourists from all over the globe, rivaling the grandeur of the Mysore Dasara.
