Overview of Sonda

Sonda (also known as Swadi) is a historically and religiously significant town located about 18 kilometers from Sirsi in Karnataka (Pin: 581336). Surrounded by the River Shamala which serves as a natural moat, the region boasts the historical remnants of the Rajas of Sonda. During the reign of Arasappa Nayaka, it became a major religious hub with the establishment of several Mutts, most notably the Vadiraja Mutt propagating Dwaita philosophy. Key highlights include the ancient Trivikrama temple featuring a massive 21-meter monolithic rock Dhwajastambha (flag post).

History & Architecture

The town dates back to the reign of the Sonda Nayakas, feudatories of the Vijayanagara Empire. The architecture reflects traditional Hoysala and Vijayanagara influences, particularly visible in the stone carvings of the Trivikrama Temple and the structural remnants of the royal past.

Ideal for history buffs and spiritual seekers alike, Sonda can be easily reached from Sirsi by road. Visitors should respect local temple traditions and dress modestly.
