Sringeri is a picturesque town situated on the banks of the river Tunga in the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka, nestled at the foot of the Western Ghats. Historically associated with the epic sage Rishyashringa, Sringeri is renowned globally for housing the first of the four Amnaya Mathas established by the great Advaita philosopher, Adi Shankara Bhagavatpada. The town is famous for the Jagadguru Shankaracharya Matha, the temple dedicated to Sharadamba (deity of learning), the ancient Vidyashankara temple exhibiting stunning architecture, Adi Shankara's shrine, and an old Jain Basadi dedicated to Parswanatha Tirthankara. Historically patronized by numerous kingdoms including Vijayanagar kings, Haidar Ali, Tippu Sultan, and the Mysore Wodeyars, Sringeri remains a prominent seat of spiritual and vedic learning.
