Overview
St. Aloysius Chapel is a magnificent architectural marvel perched atop Light House Hill in the heart of Mangaluru, Karnataka. Built in 1885 by Rev. Father Joseph Willy, the chapel is renowned for its breathtaking interior artwork and bears a striking resemblance to the world-famous Sistine Chapel in Rome.
History
Constructed in 1885 within the St. Aloysius College campus, the chapel was dedicated to St. Aloysius Gonzaga, a young nobleman who renounced his wealth and life of privilege to serve the needy and victims of the plague.
Architecture & Highlights
The walls and ceiling of the chapel are completely covered in exquisite paintings, frescoes, and oil-on-canvas artworks created by the Italian Jesuit artist Antonio Moscheni in 1999–2001. Notable works include the Crowing of the Cock, the life events of St. Aloysius, and portraits of various saints and biblical scenes.
