Overview
Sultan Battery is a watchtower-cum-miniature fortress built in black stones in 1784 by Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore. Located in Boloor, about 6 km from the Mangalore City Bus Stand, it was strategically constructed to prevent English warships from entering the Gurpur river. Today, the remaining structure is also known locally as Tipu's Well. Despite being a deserted spot, its bafflingly exquisite construction features arrangements for mounting cannons all-round.
History
Constructed by Tipu Sultan in the late 18th century, the watchtower served as a vital defense mechanism against British warships navigating the Gurpur river. It stands as a testament to the military architecture and strategic planning of the era.
Architecture
Built entirely using black stones, the structure mimics a miniature fortress. It includes specialized arrangements designed for mounting cannons and provides a panoramic view of the surrounding river and landscape.
