About Talacauvery
Talacauvery is the birthplace of the sacred river Cauvery, located on the picturesque slopes of the Brahmagiri hills near Bhagamandala in the Kodagu (Coorg) district of Karnataka, about 40 kms from Madikeri. Perched at an altitude of 1,276 meters above sea level, it holds immense religious and cultural significance for the people of Kodagu and Hindus across South India.
History & Significance
According to Hindu mythology and local Puranas, Goddess Cauvery manifested here to bless Sage Agasthya and the people of the region. The holy spot is marked by a small temple and a sacred water tank (Kundike) which is considered the actual source of the river. From this small pond, the water underground mysteriously gushes out at a prescribed moment, celebrated annually during Tula Sankramana.
Highlights & Architecture
The temple complex features traditional Kodava-style architecture with sloping tiled roofs. Pilgrims take a holy dip in the tank before climbing up the steps of the Brahmagiri hill for a panoramic view of the misty Western Ghats. The annual Tula Sankramana festival in October attracts thousands of devotees who witness the sacred spring bubble up at the exact auspicious moment.
