Talkad is a historic pilgrim and tourist town located on the left bank of the River Cauvery in Karnataka, situated about 45 km from Mysore. Once serving as the glorious capital of the Western Gangas and later the Cholas, Talkad is famously known for its vast expanses of sand dunes that cover ancient temple structures. According to legend, the town derived its name from two hunter chieftains, Tala and Kada.
History & Architecture
The town boasts a rich heritage of Dravidian architecture, most notably exemplified by the Kirti Narayana temple built by the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana. Talkad is exceptionally renowned for the Pancha Linga shrines—five sacred temples dedicated to Lord Shiva (Pataleshwara, Maraleshwara, Arakeshwara, Vaidyanatheshwara, and Mallikarjuna). Except for Vaidyanatheshwara, the other four shrines remain mostly buried under sand dunes. These sacred temples are opened for grand ceremonial worship and darshan only once every twelve years during the Panchalinga Darshana festival.
