Overview of The Mysore Zoo
Established in 1892 by Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar, the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, popularly known as The Mysore Zoo, is one of India's oldest and most professionally managed zoos. Spread over 157 acres, it is home to a vast range of exotic and rare species in lush green, naturalistic enclosures.
History
Originally conceived as the private zoo of the Maharaja of Mysore, it was designed by German landscaper and horticulturist G.H. Krumbiegel. It was opened to the public in 1902 and was later renamed to honor its founder.
Highlights
Major attractions include elephants, big cats like tigers and leopards, giraffes, zebras, rhinoceros, and a walk-through aviary. It also features a dedicated rescue center and a natural history museum.
