Overview and History

Thondanoor (also known as Tondanur) is a historic and spiritually significant village located in the Mandya district of Karnataka, about 30 km from Melkote. Originally known as Yadavagiri, this sacred site was sanctified by the Srivaishnava philosopher Sri Ramanujacharya, who stayed here before proceeding to Melkote in the 12th century. It holds immense importance for both pilgrims and history enthusiasts due to its ancient Hoysala architecture and deep association with the conversion of the Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana from Jainism to Srivaishnavism.

Architecture and Highlights

The village is home to two prominent, beautifully sculpted temples dedicated to Lord Krishna (Narayana/Krishna temple) and Lord Vishnu (Narayana temple), showcasing exquisite Hoysala craftsmanship with intricate stone carvings. Another major landmark is the massive reservoir known as Moti Talab (Pearl Lake), constructed under the direct guidance of Sri Ramanujacharya. Surrounded by picturesque hills, the tranquil blue waters offer an excellent spot for sightseeing, picnics, and quiet contemplation.

Travel Guide

Thondanoor is easily accessible by road from Mysuru and Bengaluru, typically visited as a day trip alongside Melkote. Visitors should dress modestly, respect local temple customs, and carry drinking water, as commercial tourist amenities directly at the site are limited.
