Tungabhadra Dam, constructed across the Tungabhadra River, is one of the most prominent multipurpose dam projects in South India. Situated near Hosapete (Hospet) in the Vijayanagara district of Karnataka, it serves critical roles in irrigation, flood control, hydro-electric power generation, and municipal water supply for Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Initiated as a joint project between the Kingdom of Mysore and the Nizam of Hyderabad in the 1940s and completed in 1953, the dam stands as a remarkable feat of mid-20th-century hydraulic engineering. The massive reservoir created by the dam is locally known as Pampa Sagara, named after the classical name of the river.

Key Highlights & Attractions

  • Brindavan-Style Gardens: Located directly below the main dam, beautiful landscaped gardens feature emerald lawns, flowerbeds, hedge mazes, and a musical dancing fountain show in the evening.

  • Aquarium & Deer Park: Small educational attractions near the garden grounds catering to families and children.
  • Light & Sound Show: On selected evenings, the dam and gardens are brilliantly lit up, offering a spectacular visual display.
