Located 60 kms from Mangalore in Karnataka, Udupi is a deeply revered pilgrimage center and coastal town. It is globally famous for the Sri Krishna Temple, founded by the great Vaishnava saint Sri Madhvacharya. The temple is the seat of the eight Mutts (Ashta Mutts), which share the right of worshipping Sri Krishna in a two-year rotation known as the Paryaya festival.
According to local legend, the idol of Sri Krishna miraculously turned around to give darshan to Kanakadasa, a low-caste devotee who was barred from entering the main sanctum. Beyond its spiritual significance, Udupi is blessed with natural beauty, featuring the pristine Malpe Beach and the geological wonder of St. Mary's Islands nearby. The adjacent university town of Manipal (5 kms away) adds a modern vibrancy to the region.
