Venur (or Venoor) is a prominent and serene Jain pilgrim center located in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, approximately 30 kms from Mangalore. Situated on the banks of the river Gurupura, it is globally renowned for its towering 38-foot-tall monolithic statue of Lord Gomateshwara (Bahubali).
The monolithic statue of Gomateshwara at Venur was built in 1604 AD by Timmaraja Ajila, a prince of the Ajila dynasty that ruled the region. Carved out of a single block of stone, it closely resembles the famous statues at Shravanabelagola and Karkala, reflecting classic Hoysala and Vijayanagara architectural influences. The complex also houses several ancient Jain Basadis (temples).
Venur offers a peaceful spiritual retreat away from bustling city life. Visitors can explore the serene temple surroundings, admire the intricate architecture, and experience the rich Jain heritage of coastal Karnataka.
