Kateel, nestled on the banks of the picturesque Nandini River in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, is one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in South India. The temple is uniquely situated on an islet, surrounded by the river's serene waters, creating an atmosphere of profound tranquility and divine energy. It is dedicated to Goddess Durga Parameshwari, who is worshipped here as the destroyer of evil and the protector of the righteous.

According to the Puranas, the origin of this shrine is tied to a divine struggle between the demon Arunasura and the Devas. Arunasura had secured a boon from Brahma that he would not be killed by any two-legged or four-legged beings. Empowered, he wreaked havoc in the heavens. The Devas sought the intervention of Goddess Durga. She assumed the form of a beautiful woman to distract him and eventually transformed into a bee (a creature with six legs) to kill him. Legend holds that the river Nandini was created by the Goddess to bless the land, and the site became a center of immense spiritual power where the Goddess manifested to restore order.

Historically, the temple has received patronage from various local dynasties and the Alupa kings, though it gained significant prominence over the centuries as a major center for Durgopasana. The current architectural marvel, particularly the Garbhagriha and the main hall, showcases the craftsmanship of the renowned sculptor Ranjal Gopal Shenoy. His intricate carvings on the pillars and the sanctum walls depict mythological tales with breathtaking detail, making the structure as much an art gallery as it is a place of worship.

The temple layout is characterized by a traditional Kerala-style architecture blended with coastal Karnataka influences, featuring terracotta-tiled roofs and heavy wooden motifs. The surrounding river acts as a natural moat, separating the spiritual enclave from the bustle of the outer world. Visitors are often struck by the serene isolation of the temple, which remains accessible via a bridge, allowing devotees to transition from the mundane to the spiritual realm seamlessly.

The spiritual atmosphere at Kateel is centered around the grand Brahmakalotsava and the annual Rathothsava (Car Festival), which draw thousands of pilgrims. During these festivities, the deity is taken out in a grand procession amidst music, Vedic chants, and vibrant cultural displays. The temple is also famous for its Yakshagana performances, an indigenous dance-drama form, which are often offered to the Goddess as a form of devotion, reflecting the deep cultural heritage of the Tulu Nadu region.
